May – gigs in NYC and Chicago coming up!

Happy spring!

I’ve really been enjoying this breath of fresh air in Brooklyn. April has been a great month. It started off with a trip to Chicago to do some gigs playing my music with some of my old buddies, Jeremy Cunningham, Matt Ulery, and Jake Vinsel. I had so much fun playing with these guys again. It had been way too long, and they brought so much energy to the music! I also did a super fun gig with WW Lowman for Bill Lowman’s birthday. Craziness ensued, as to be expected. What a great trip!

After that, I came back to NYC and did a handful of gigs with Lena Bloch’s quartet to celebrate the release of our new album, “Feathery”. Lena knows how to put great bands together, and we had some amazing music with Billy Mintz, Cameron Brown, Putter Smith, and Russ Lossing. Cameron, Putter, and Russ, all played on different gigs, and each brought something beautiful and unique to the sound.

May is shaping up to be busy and rewarding, as well. I’m extremely excited to be playing my new music with a new band featuring Will Graefe (guitar), John Tate (bass), and Jason Nazary (drums). We’ll be playing Shapeshifter Lab on 5/5 and Branded Saloon on 5/11. These will be great, I hope you can make it!

After that, I’ll be playing a weekend (5/16-17) at the Jazz Gallery with Greg Ward and his new large ensemble. Greg was commissioned by the Jazz Gallery to do a residency there and write a set of new music. I can’t wait to dive into this stuff – Greg is an incredible composer and his music is always fun and challenging. Not to mention that he’s one of the best saxophonists on the planet right now!

Finally, I’ll be running back to Chicago (5/19-23) to do some gigs with the inimitable drummer, Dana Hall. I’ll be playing with Dana’s Black Fire band, which performs the music of Andrew Hill, at Andy’s. The next night, Dana has put together a band with John Wojciechowski, Clark Sommers, and me to perform Charles Lloyd’s classic album, “Of Course, Of Course”, at the Jazz Record Art Collective series. This record has been an inspiration to me for many years now, so I jumped at the opportunity to play it live. After that, I’ll be playing with my trio (Dana Hall/Matt Ulery) at The Lighthouse doing a bunch of new music I’ve written over the past year.

Fun times! Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you OUT AND ABOUT!

Tony Malaby added to Branded Saloon 1/17

Great news to report – the incredible saxophonist, Tony Malaby, will be joining my band for our concert at the Branded Saloon in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn on 1/17! Tony is one of my favorite musicians anywhere, and is one of the main reasons I wanted to move to NYC. Here’s to making our own dreams come true!

1/17/13 – Dave Miller Quartet (feat. Tony Malaby, John Tate (bass), and Billy Mintz (drums)) @ Branded Saloon, 8-10pm

If it’s your thing, RSVP on Facebook.

Hitting the road with Patricia Barber / upcoming concerts in 2013

Patricia Barber – Monday Night Live at the Green Mill Volume II

I’m very excited to announce that I will be touring with Concord/Blue Note recording artist, Patricia Barber, beginning in April. My dear friend and her normal guitarist, John Kregor, is having a baby in the spring and will be staying off the road for awhile. I met up with Patricia when I was back in Chicago for the holidays. We played a little, talked a little, and decided it was a good fit! Patricia has a great new album, Smash, coming out January 22nd on Concord Jazz. She’ll be touring for it throughout the year and I’ll be stepping in midway. So far, it looks like we’re going to Germany, Turkey, Portugal, etc. I’m very much looking forward to it!

Check out everything Patricia Barber.

I’m also excited to announce some gigs I’ve got coming up with my own music:

1/17 – Dave Miller/John Tate (bass)/Billy Mintz (drums) @ Branded Saloon (Brooklyn)

John is an old old friend and my favorite bassist. Many of you know him. Billy is a veteran of both the LA and NYC jazz scenes and has played with everyone. I’ve been doing some gigs/recordings with him and Lena Bloch, which have been fantastic. Billy is an incredible drummer and just has that vibe, if you know what I mean.

1/31 – Dave Miller/Adam Cote (bass)/Shawn Baltazor (drums) @ Branded Saloon (Brooklyn)

Adam and Shawn are fantastic musicians and, coincidentally, my neighbors, too! Great dudes, great vibes…looking forward to making some music together.

3/14 – DM + TBA @ Lark Cafe

Jake Henry, a great trumpet player, is curating a new series at the Lark Cafe in Ditmas Park. The room is really nice and I’m free to do whatever I want, so stay tuned for details on this…

My NYC trio with John Tate and the great Devin Drobka (drums) will be doing a mini-tour in the midwest in March. These are my dudes!!! Devin has relocated to Milwaukee. We miss him, but he’s doing lots of great stuff out there, so if you’re around, check him out. We’ll be playing all of our originals and will probably have some very special guests. Here’s what we’ve got so far:

3/18 – Skylark (Chicago)

3/19 – Bar Deville (Chicago)

3/20 – 914 New Music Fest (Chicago)

We also plan to hit Milwaukee and Madison, so stay tuned!
